Holiday Inn Express Wins Building Award

Manchester’s Holiday Inn Express has won the Brick Development Association’s award for Best Commercial Building. The distinctive wedge shaped building on Oxford Road was built by Trafford contractor Russells Construction for operator Zinnia Manchester Hotels, and opened for business towards the end of 2010.

The 147-bed hotel was nominated by Michelmersh Brick Holdings, manufacturer of the Blockleys Smooth Black brick which gives the building its characteristic appearance. The exterior of the contemporary 12-storey building was designed to complement the industrial aesthetic of this part of Manchester, in particular the nearby railway arches of Oxford Road train station and canal towpaths.

The statement building is bordered by Oxford Road – thought to be Europe’s busiest bus route - Hulme Street and the River Medlock, and presented a number of challenges for the construction team which employed a variety of techniques to build on such a constrained site.

In its judgement, the BDA said: “The building is a many layered challenge, within a difficult inner city site. The site presented many problems which were solved in a positive and determined manner with detailing which has proved to be precise and effective.

“This attractive building with precise detailing has been well thought out with a good interior. It was built on a very difficult, triangular site, and has made a positive contribution to the city.”

Andrew Russell, managing director of Russells Construction, said: “It’s great to see one of our projects win an award, and it’s particularly satisfying that this is for the brickwork element of the Holiday Inn which was extremely tricky considering the challenges the site posed in terms of access and space. The whole team - and in that I include the architects, materials suppliers and tradesmen - did a great job in delivering a stunning building and I’m delighted their expertise has been recognised by the Brick Development Association.”
